Ashwagandha has become the darling of the supplement industry’s adaptogen category, appearing in everything from stress-relief gummies to testosterone boosters to sleep formulas. What Tutela Medical Finds Credible — and What It Does Not
The stress and cortisol data is the strongest case for ashwagandha, and Tutela Medical finds it reasonably credible with important caveats. - People who have discussed it with their healthcare provider and have no contraindications
Who Should Avoid Ashwagandha
- Individuals with thyroid disorders (particularly hyperthyroidism) — ashwagandha can alter thyroid hormone levels
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women (traditionally contraindicated; insufficient safety data)
- People with autoimmune conditions (potential immune stimulation)
- Anyone with liver disease or taking hepatotoxic medications
- Nightshade-sensitive individuals (ashwagandha is in the Solanaceae family)
- People expecting dramatic testosterone or cognitive enhancement from a supplement alone
