Marketed as a cure-all for modern stress, ashwagandha is one of the few herbal ingredients that actually has a growing body of clinical trial data behind it — though the quality and scope of that data is considerably narrower than supplement advertising suggests.

What Is Ashwagandha?

Withania somnifera is a nightshade family shrub native to India and North Africa, used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. What Tutela Medical Finds Credible — and What It Does Not

  • People who have discussed it with their healthcare provider and have no contraindications

Who Should Avoid Ashwagandha

  • Individuals with thyroid disorders (particularly hyperthyroidism) — ashwagandha can alter thyroid hormone levels
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women (traditionally contraindicated; insufficient safety data)
  • People with autoimmune conditions (potential immune stimulation)
  • Anyone with liver disease or taking hepatotoxic medications
  • Nightshade-sensitive individuals (ashwagandha is in the Solanaceae family)
  • People expecting dramatic testosterone or cognitive enhancement from a supplement alone

Ashwagandha occupies a relatively unusual position in the supplement world: it has more clinical trial support than most herbal ingredients, but that support is still modest in scale and narrower in scope than the industry pretends. The stress and cortisol data is the most convincing and the most relevant to how most people use the supplement. Everything else — testosterone boosting, cognitive enhancement, athletic performance — is built on preliminary data that the marketing has dramatically outpaced.

If you choose to try ashwagandha, use a standardized branded extract (KSM-66 or Sensoril) at studied doses (300–600 mg/day), limit use to 8–12 weeks initially, monitor for any signs of liver distress, and maintain realistic expectations. It is a modest adaptogen, not a miracle compound.
